Visit the NMPW Iwo Jima Commemoration in Fredericksburg

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. To honor the soldiers who served and sacrificed for their country, the National Museum of the Pacific War (NMPW) in Fredericksburg his hosting a free three-day event from February 21-23.

The event will feature several different tributes and educational components for visitors. Some of the day one highlights include an Iwo Jima plaque dedication, youth panel, and a screening of the 1949 film “Sands of Iwo Jima.”

The second day will host a bevy of speakers, such as Richard B. Frank, Keil Gentry, Steve McCloud, and Jonathan Parshall. At night, a live score from Montopolis will play alongside an archival photography display.

On the final day, NMPW is hosting a battle reenactment at the Pacific Combat Zone (508 E Austin St, Fredericksburg, TX 78624) beginning at 2 p.m. Steve McCloud and Jonathan Parshall will host a book signing after the event.

The NMPW is the only institution in the continental U.S. that exclusively tells stories of the Pacific and Asiatic Theaters during World War II. With more than 55,000 feet of exhibit space, you’ll learn plenty about important moments in history, as lively exhibits help bring these fascinating stories to life.
