Learn About 1,200-Year-Old History at the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site

Nacogdoches is the oldest city in Texas, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the surrounding area has a fascinating history. Thanks to the Texas Historical Commission, one of those captivating places is now back in operation: the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site.

The ancestral Caddo people built a ceremonial center at this location more than 1,200 years ago. Three earthen mounds, which the Caddo consider sacred, still remain. An April 2019 tornado nearly destroyed the entire area, and rebuilding efforts have been in place ever since. Among the highlights were a new $2.5 million visitor center and the restoration of the site’s traditional grass house, which was rebuilt by five female Caddo apprentices and over 20 members of the Caddo Nation.

Under the guidance of Caddo Nation, the rebuilt center was designed to include architectural elements that blend in with the surrounding landscape, including a self-weathering steel roof to mimic the original Caddo mounds and tornado preparedness enhancements.

The re-opening ceremony included atlatl throwing, flintknapping, and a demonstration of friction fire, along with a tour of the site. Visitors to the newly renovated museum can also take educational courses on topics like foraging, birdwatching, stargazing, and pottery. My pottery-making skills are still extremely beginner-level, but you’ll walk away with a cool souvenir, which is never a bad thing.

If you don’t want to sit in a class, be sure to explore the gardens and the three miles of walking trails, which offer scenic views and peaceful environments. The trails also connect with El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Groups of 15 or more are eligible for guided field trips.
