In its early days, the city of Frisco was more pastureland than city. Today, it’s the hub of global sports brands and competitions. It’s where the Dallas Cowboys train. It’s home of the Frisco RoughRiders minor league baseball team and the Soccer Hall of Fame. It’s hosted the Dallas Open tennis tournament. And it’s the setting for all kinds of golfing greatness with PGA Frisco. Naturally, a catchy nickname followed: Sports City USA. It’s quite the fitting moniker.
To celebrate its sports-centric history, Visit Frisco has launched a seven-part docuseries called “Where Greatness Grows: The Story of Sports City USA.” Alongside the docuseries premiere, the city also announced a new brand and logo for Sports City USA.
A Walk Inside Sports City USA
Unlike just about every documentary on Netflix and Hulu that is generally, like, 1-2 hours too long, Visit Frisco understands the power of brevity while still being able to tell good stories. Each installment of the series runs under four minutes.
There’s a strong mix of participants, too. You’ll hear from 15 different featured participants, including FC Dallas President Dan Hunt, former NFL player and current cookie confectioner Jeff Allen, delightful sports and comedy group Dude Perfect, Cowboys co-owner and Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones, and former Frisco mayor Mike Simpson.
It’s also nice to see younger athletes like high school golfer Grace Kronin and U13 badminton player Varish Karri. When I was in high school, I got featured in our school paper, but it was for winning a shopping trip to the mall, not for impressive sports performances. This is much cooler.
Personally, my favorite episode is #5, “The Ecosystem.” I am certainly a fan of watching sports (the Cowboys game may be on in the background as I write this), but I also like hearing the people and moments behind the action and how sports brings communities together. This episode delivers—the only thing missing is a tasty treat from Cookie Society while learning about its origin story.
